The science center of North West Germany

in the glass-hall of the University of Bremen

During the first round of the 'Excellence Initiative 2006' to identify Germany's best universities, the press lauded Bremen University for achieving such a high position in the rankings, referring to it as the "Marvel on the Weser". At the end of the day, Bremen was indeed confirmed as being among the top ten German universities. And not only in this respect does the University deserve to be included at the pinnacle of higher education. In the acquisition of third-party funding we are also among the ten most successful institutions. The University of Bremen is truly the science center of northwest Germany.

Founded in 1971, the University recently celebrated its 35th anniversary. Some of the ground-breaking educational concepts implemented in those early days, which became to be known as the Bremer Modell, have since become established features of modern university education all over Germany; for example interdisciplinary study and research, research-based teaching projects, orientation to practice, and responsibility towards society. These have since been augmented by new aims like internationalisation, opportunities for junior scientists and scholars in structured post-graduate programmes, gender equality, and an added sense of purpose as a "learning institution".

Among the fundamental principles distinguishing the Bremer Modell are a willingness to experiment and flexibility. The result: steadily improved positioning in the research rankings, national acclaim, and a high profile of interdisciplinary research specialisations. Research "made in Bremen" has been right at the top for many years now. The outstanding quality of research is not least due to the close cooperation with the numerous research institutes which have decided to locate on the University campus. This infrastructure is attracting more and more enterprises to the adjacent Technology Park, making it one of the leading high-tech locations in Germany, hosting close to 320 companies.
